K2/K3 NaF

K2/K3 EDTA + NaF tubes are used for blood collection in clinical laboratories. These tubes contain both the anticoagulant ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and the glycolysis inhibitor sodium fluoride (NaF). The K2 or K3 designation typically refers to the type of EDTA used in the tube. The primary purpose of these tubes is to preserve blood samples for haematological testing while also inhibiting glycolysis to maintain stable glucose levels. EDTA prevents blood clotting by chelating calcium ions, which are essential for the coagulation process. This makes K2/K3 EDTA tubes suitable for a variety of haematological tests, including complete blood count (CBC) and other tests that require whole blood. The addition of sodium fluoride to these tubes helps to preserve glucose levels by inhibiting glycolysis. This makes them particularly useful for tests that require accurate measurement of glucose concentration over time, such as glucose tolerance tests.
